I still remember the day that my LLC was approved. I called my brother who was business partner at the time and said to him, hey business partner! I know it was corny, but it meant a lot to me that day to know I officially had paperwork with my name on it as a business.

Your experience may be similar or it may be completely different but there are at least 5 things you need to do BEFORE you start your business. I’ve worked with hundreds of startup businesses and I’m hoping with my own entrepreneurial journey, legal experience, and experiences of my clients I can give you some advice that will save you a ton of money and headaches!

Even though starting a business can be an exciting and rewarding experience, it also requires careful planning and attention to legal considerations.

Here are three things you should do before you start your business:

#1 Create a written agreement with partners or investors.

This is the single most important advice you need to know. BEFORE, you start your business make sure there is a clear agreement in place between you and your business partner. 70% of the lawsuits for my business clients deal with business relations with their current business partner. If you are starting a business with partners or investors, it's important to have a written agreement in place outlining the terms of the partnership or investment. This can help prevent a TON of misunderstandings or disputes in the future. This applies for family member and spouses as well! Oftentimes we think that because someone is my spouse or family member, we don’t need an agreement, WRONG. This could not be farther from the truth! An agreement is not a bad thing, it lays out everyone’s obligations and what happens if they don’t fulfill those obligations. This advice can help save marriages and keep the family table strong during Thanksgiving.

#2 Create a solid business plan

A business plan is a written document that outlines your business goals, strategies, and financial projections. It helps you to think through all aspects of your business and to create a roadmap for success. A well-written business plan can also be useful for attracting investors and securing loans. If you don’t know where you are going, you will likely go somewhere you don’t want to go. If you don’t want to fail in your new business idea, at least create a one page plan to outline how you plan on reaching your business goals. You will not be able to accurately plan out every single detail, but writing down a broad idea of how you plan on accomplishing your goals can help you win big in business. HOAs and other communities may utilize deed restrictions to keep property values high or to control the development of properties in a particular area. However, any seller may place a deed restriction on their property.

Common deed restrictions

What do deed restrictions look like? They can take a variety of forms, some of the most common being:

Animal restrictions: These restrictions limit or prohibit certain types or breeds of animals. For example, many residential properties restrict the ownership of livestock animals.
Vehicle restrictions: Vehicle restrictions may ban certain vehicles such as boats, trailers, work trucks, or even unlicensed or inoperable cars from being parked in driveways or on the street.
Use restrictions: Home business restrictions are one of the more common deed restrictions and may prohibit you from operating your small business from your home, placing business signs in your yard, or even renting out your home on Airbnb or other similar platforms.
Personal property restrictions: Some deed restrictions limit the items that you can have on your property. Items such as hot tubs, pools, sports equipment, and other things may be prohibited.
Renovation or building restrictions: Fences, sheds, and other structures may be restricted to keep properties looking uniform or to ensure your neighbors enjoy an unrestricted view from their property. Additionally, some deed restrictions even go so far as to outline an acceptable appearance for the property. Under these restrictions, you may not be able to renovate the exterior of your home, choose a new façade color, or build with certain materials.

How deed restrictions are enforced

Deed restrictions are made between a buyer and seller and thus are contractual. They cannot be forced unknowingly upon a buyer; buyers must have notice of the conditions before they purchase a property. Deed restrictions will always show up when doing a title search, but buyers may also wish to talk to a realtor, real estate attorney, or someone from the HOA or local government office.

Most of the time, the entity that creates the restriction is also the one that enforces it. Assignees, grantors, and their successors are all able to enforce a deed restriction unless it has previously been revoked. What’s more, deed restrictions are often passed on with the property. This means that they will apply to current and future buyers and may continue to be enforced by subsequent owners.

Generally, the law doesn’t favor imposing restrictions on the free use of your property. Arbitrary or unreasonable deed restrictions are not considered acceptable and therefore may not be enforceable. However, the law will side with covenants and restrictions that:

Are in line with public policy
Do not violate constitutional or statutory provisions
Are within reasonable bounds
Have been clearly stated

Some restrictions and covenants remain in effect indefinitely, while others may expire after a specified period. In most cases, deed restrictions are permanent and non-negotiable.

What a deed restriction might mean for you

If deed restrictions are clearly outlined and won’t affect your lifestyle, they may not mean much.

However, if you purchase a deed-restricted property without a full understanding of what the covenants and restrictions are, you may find yourself in a difficult position. Or perhaps you’ve been visited by an HOA representative who’s there to let you know that the new fence you’ve just paid for is against the rules.

Changing a deed restriction is difficult and often requires the property purchaser to go through a formal process with the restricting entity — oftentimes an HOA, home builder, or government body. It is far simpler to understand what deed restrictions are connected with your property before you complete the purchase.

However, the most important documents in real estate are offers, agreements, and contracts between the buyer and seller.

We are going to talk about the five things you need to know about trademarks, by answering five questions most people ask me about trademarks. . .

What is a Trademark?

So let’s dive right in. . .

1. What is a Trademark?

The USPTO defines a trademark as this.

A trademark is a word, phrase, symbol, and/or design that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others.

A service mark is a word, phrase, symbol, and/or design that identifies and distinguishes the source of a service rather than goods.

Some examples include brand names, slogans, and logos. The term "trademark" is often used in a general sense to refer to both trademarks and service marks.

Many people get trademarks confused with patents and copyrights, so let’s talk about that briefly as well.

A patent is a limited duration property right relating to an invention, granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in exchange for public disclosure of the invention. Patentable materials include machines, manufactured articles, industrial processes, and chemical compositions. The duration of patent protection depends on the type of patent granted:

Design Patents - 15 years from issuance for applications filed on or after May 13, 2015 (14 years from issuance if filed before May 13, 2015)
Utility patents and plant patents - 20 years from the date on which the application for the patent was filed in the United States or, in special cases, from the date an earlier related application was filed.

A copyright protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. The duration of copyright protection depends on several factors. For works created by an individual, protection lasts for the life of the author, plus 70 years. For works created anonymously, pseudonymously, and for hire, protection lasts 95 years from the date of publication or 120 years from the date of creation, whichever is shorter.

USPTO examines every application for compliance with federal law and rules. The most common reason to refuse registration is a “likelihood of confusion” between the mark of the applicant and a mark already registered or in a prior-filed pending application owned by another party. The USPTO determines that a likelihood of confusion exists when both (1) the marks are similar, and (2) the goods and/or services of the parties are related such that consumers would mistakenly believe they come from the same source.

3. What exactly does a trademark protect?

Local Protection

Trademark rights are granted the moment you use a mark for commercial purposes. These are referred to as common law trademark rights. Once you begin using the mark, it is yours without the requirement for official registration. However, there are extra protections you gain from official registration.

Once you begin using a trademark “in commerce” even if it’s not registered, it gains local protection – meaning only in the area in which you’re selling or offering the product or service. So if another business tries to offer a similar commodity with a similar name in the same area, you have a strong legal case to get them to stop.

In most cases that protection doesn’t extend to other geographic regions, though, so if a competitor elsewhere has a similar name, you may find it difficult to have a legal case to stop their usage of the trademark.

State Protection

Specifically, registering with the state gives you a filing date that is official and will carry weight in court should you have to defend your trademark. This can be important not only in stopping others from using your mark but in defending yourself against accusations that you have infringed on someone else's work.

U.S. Protection

You gain a great deal of leverage by filing your trademark with the USPTO. Registration automatically gives you national protection, a stronger case, and the presumption of national ownership should another party, regardless of location, attempt to claim infringement against you.

In addition, registration serves as a notification that someone owns and uses the trademark. It becomes a matter of public record, searchable by others.

Also, some states have laws in place that work alongside federal trademark laws to help you avoid unfair competition and setting liability standards because of a greater available body of case law. Where gaps in enforcement exist, state common laws can help to fill the holes. Moreover, they can afford remedies beyond those specified in the Federal Lanham Act.

Advantages to Federal Trademark Protection

Federal trademarks supersede state ones at almost every level. Besides having priority if the federal registration was filed first, the following benefits apply to possessing a federal as opposed to a state mark:

Federal registrations give you a basis to file in other countries, including the Madrid Protocol.
Federal trademarks can allow you to stop imports that are unauthorized and use your mark.
Federal trademarks give you ownership across all 50 states, plus all U.S. territories.
Federal trademarks allow you to use the ® symbol.
You can file infringement suits in federal courts
Your mark will be listed in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) database.
You can file before you begin using the trademark.
You may be eligible for much greater awards in cases of infringement of federal marks, including attorney's fees, court costs, incontestability, and enhanced damages in cases of malicious, fraudulent, or willful infringement.

Those who aren't U.S. nationals can count on Section 44 of the trademark statute to file a federal application based on ownership of a foreign trademark in their home country and an intent to use in the U.S. No use of the mark needs to exist within the U.S. at the time of filing, though eventually, the mark must be used to avoid cancellation.

For State Registration

A person who uses a trademark or service mark in this state may apply with the Secretary of State to register a mark.

The Secretary of State's office maintains a searchable database of trademarks and service marks registered in this state.

The Secretary of State's office does not resolve conflicts over ownership of registered trademarks and service marks.

It is the applicant's responsibility to determine if a mark is already in use in other states or has been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Failure to do so may result in a civil action being filed against you. The acceptance of a trademark filing by the Indiana Secretary of State does not establish rights to the mark.

How to know if you should start a business?

At the time of this writing, I am writing this blog in the year of 2020. 2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year. We are in the midst of dealing with a global pandemic, economic crisis, racial tension between law enforcement, and tragic deaths from superstars like Kobe Bryant and Black Panther’s Chadwick Boseman.

I heard someone say that 2020 is the worst year to start a business. You would have to be crazy to start a business in this type of climate. I asked them why? He said because 2020 is the year of unpredictability. Particularly with the pandemic you don’t know how things are going to turn out for the economy, the best thing to do is get a secure job.

However, if said companies like Uber, AirBnB, Square, Groupon, and many more would have followed this logic back in the 2008 recession they will not be successful businesses in 2020. I have identified at least 8 Tips to Starting Your Business and taking it to the next level. You need to know the 5 P’s and the 3 M’s to starting your business the right way.

The 5 P’s are as follows:

1. Purpose

2. Proposal

3. Profitability

4. Position

5. Perseverance

Let me explain the 5 P’s in greater detail.

1. Purpose

Purpose is the reason for your existence. It is what many like to call “Your Why.” My purpose is to empower people to succeed. I cannot do a business that doesn’t align with my purpose and neither can you. I was able to identify my purpose back in undergrad, when I joined a group called Echo PC. Every Saturday we gather together to make sandwiches and pack lunches to serve the homeless in downtown Chicago. After several trips of serving the homeless, I felt as if we were only putting a bandaid on a major problem. These homeless people depended on us to give them food and they needed us every single Saturday. I wanted to know more for them so that they did not have to depend on us. I realized back then what was my purpose: empowering people to succeed. I did not just want to give people a handout but empowering them by giving them a hand up.

After identifying what was my purpose on this earth, I was able to use that to guide major decisions in my life. When my friends found out I started working at a law firm, they would send cases my way. The type of cases they would send me was around business law. I kept getting cases from business owners who needed help reviewing a contract, setting up their LLC, or getting their nonprofit legal work set up. All of sudden, I felt like I was truly operating in purpose by helping business owners continue to do business and serve their community. Then, it hit me that I was fulfilling my calling doing business law by empowering business owners through legal work. Further I was helping the community by helping businesses who produce jobs and great products and services for the community. The first key to starting any business the right way is to identify if this business is alignment with your purpose.

2. Proposal

What does a business do? Simply put, business is about solving problems. All businesses start with an idea leading to a solution. If your business idea is a solution to a problem in the marketplace, you are considered valuable and it may be time for you to start a business. Many business owners start their business because they had an idea and a solution, not because they wanted to make a ton of money.

For example, when I started my law firm, I wasn’t in it solely to make money. I saw that small business owners needed legal help time and time again, however, there weren’t many attorneys focusing on this target audience in my area. I had so many ideas on how to serve this market and I knew if I implemented it, those ideas will help make small business owners' lives better. 3. Profitability

Whatever your business idea is you have to make sure your business idea is profitable. When I say profitable, I mean people who are willing to pay a considerable amount for your product. In order to do business you have to make money, this means that if people aren’t willing to pay enough for you to make a profit on the product or service you are selling you, then your idea is not profitable. If you have an idea that doesn’t make profitability and you are actually losing money and you have a great hobby and not a business. Thus, if you are considering starting a business make sure your idea is profitable.

4. Position

Position is so important in considering whether you should start your business. You have to know what position you play in building your business. Every entrepreneur is not a great marketer, sales person, or good at customer service. However, you have to know what position you are supposed to play in your business and hire those around you to make your business successful. When starting a business you have to identify what you are good at and what aspects of the business you would love doing over and over again. The mistake many business owners make is trying to do every role in the business, such as a lawyer, accountant, insurance agent, etc. You need to surround yourself with the right team to win in business. Once you understand your position and have access to the right team, you may be ready to start a business.

5. Perseverance

WARNING: when you start your business you will have MANY obstacles on your road to greatness. You will fail, you will make mistakes, there will be slow business days or months, however, you must have the perseverance! Perseverance is the drive to keep pushing through those obstacles to succeed in business. I like to say, whenever there is a problem, there is a solution around the corner. When starting a business you must have the right mindset. It is easy to watch movies or youtube videos about famous business owners who started off small and became extremely successful. However, in everyone's story there are times when it gets tough to keep pursuing your business dream. During those tough times, you need to exercise perseverance. If you have a strong mindset and perseverance, then you are ready to start a business.

However, even if you possess these five traits, you still need to know the 3 M’s to accelerate your business. The three M’s for starting your business is: Money, Mentorship, and Mastery.

Money

Here is the truth, you need money to start your business. It doesn’t have to be your money, but money will be required to help you start your business the right way. You need money to pay for your legal documents or hiring an attorney. You need money for marketing, branding, insurance, and other items to serve your products and/or services. The next question becomes how much money do you need. How much money you need really depends on the industry, however, if you develop the four T’s it can help you spend less money. The four T’s are your talent, time, tenacity, and team. I will go into detail about this in another blog, however, if you possess these qualities, the less you will have to spend on your business. The truth still remains if you want to accelerate your business, you need money.

Mentorship

“A smart person learns from his mistakes. A wise person learns from the mistakes of others.” - Unknown. There is always someone out there who has probably already done what you are looking to do in business. Wouldn’t they be the best person to learn from? There are multiple ways to learn from success in your particular industry. It may be through courses, mentorship programs, or working a job. Thus, the way you get mentorship does not matter, but mentorship can help you accelerate your business.

Mastery

Mastery is often forgotten when people are trying to figure out if they should start a business. There is no way around it, the reason why people choose your business is because they are assuming that you provide them the best value for the best price. The only way to provide them with the best value is become a master at whatever product or service you are selling or be a master in running the perfect system to produce the best product or service. Otherwise, the market will find someone else who did master it and they will choose them over you.

In conclusion, these are the 5 keys to starting your business off the right way. You need the 5 P’s: Purpose, Proposal, Profitability, Position, and Profitability. Also, the three M’s to help you take your business to the next level: Money, Mentorship, and Mastery. If you possess these things, you are ready to start your business.

7 Lessons from the Lakers 2020 Championship Game on How To Win In Life and Achieve Greatness

Often, many people use sports as an analogy for life. However, I believe basketball is one of the best sports to gain life lessons. There are so many lessons about teamwork, playing offense and defense, and the ability to shift the momentum of the game that can be applied to life. I felt there were at least seven lessons that we can take from this game to help anyone on their path to greatness and win in life.

Yesterday, the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Miami Heat for the 2020 Championship. It was a game that had meaning on so many different levels. One of those reasons being that this is the year of the tragic death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi. The pressure for the Lakers to perform was higher than usual because there were so many new fans around the world who wanted the Lakers to win this year for Kobe. As I watched the game in anticipation, there were seven lessons I learned from the Lakers game, particularly watching Lebron James, that I wanted to share with you.

Here are the seven lessons I learned from watching this championship game.

Be A Leader

You cannot deny that this series was won due to the leadership of Lebron James. My favorite quote by John Maxwell, “every organization rises and fall on leadership.” Despite heavy criticism, Lebron James decided to be the leader. He stepped up when it was time help the Lakers win the championship. If we want to the win in our lives, we must becomes leaders. We cannot wait for someone else to step up, we must step up and be a leader in our own lives.

Your greatness is in your leadership. How well you lead yourself and others will define your greatness. If you are looking to become great, look at your leadership.

Be Disciplined

Discipline is something that every self-help coach teaches about to its followers. However, the point I want to make about discipline is about the timing of discipline. Lakers didn’t get ready to be a championship team starting on yesterday. They discipline themselves all year long, even when the NBA was on recess. They had to continue to workout and perform in practice to prepare themselves to win. When Kobe died the pressure for the Lakers to perform was even higher, however, they were already disciplined as a team to step up to the plate to honor Kobe’s legacy. The same is true for us, if we want to win in our lives, we must practice discipline now, so that when is time for us to rise to the next level, we will be ready.

Be Focused

One thing I loved about this game was the level of focus Lebron and the other teammate had throughout the game. Even when they were winning by thirty points in halftime they still kept playing with intensity. The truth is that in order to get what you want out of life, you must stay focused on your goal, even when things are going right for you. Your level of focus will determine, your level of greatness.

Be Finisher

As stated before, it takes a high level of focus to play with the high level of intensity when you are winning the game by a lot of points. What it shows me is that you have to be a finisher. You have to maintain a finisher mentality. Often in life, we achieve certain markers and we don’t want to finish whatever goal we strive for. However, we must be a finisher if we want to win in life and achieve greatness.

Be A Promise Keeper

We all know, that there is no one that can keep all of his promises, except God. However, we must acknowledge the level of commitment Lebron and the Lakers had toward keeping their promise of winning a championship with that team. I kept hearing Lebron say to his teammates, “I told you.” Further, I heard Lebron say to the owner of the Lakers that he promised “to put the Lakers back where they belong.” Lebron kept his promise to himself, his teammates, and management by leading them to a championship.

Be Attractive to Talent

One thing that many noticed is that the Lakers were able to attract Lebron James and Anthony Davis to come play for their franchise. When you are striving for greatness you must know you cannot do it along. You also must know that you need to know how to attract high quality people to come work toward your goal. The Lakers being able to attract quality talent to their team allowed them to gain a championship. When you want to win in life and achieve greatness, you must know how to attract quality talent.

Be Your Role

The last thing that stuck out to me was that when the announcer asked Lebron does he think that he is the athlete to be at his prime the longest. Lebron said that is not for him to decide but for the sports analysts to decide. What that stuck out to me was that Lebron knows his role. He understand his role is to be a great player and give something for the sports analyst to argue about. When we try to do other people role we will lose, the best way to be on the path to greatness and to win in life is to be your role.

These are the seven lessons I learned from being the Lakers championship game: be a leader, disciplined, focused, finisher, promise keeper, attractive to talent, and your role. I hope it inspire you to find your path of greatness so you can win at life as well. We can all find our own path of greatness, but we must take time to learn from those who do great things. Lebron and the Lakers gave us the example, the question becomes, will you follow it?

What the World Needs the Most Now is Effective Leadership

I first want to dedicate this blog post to my great uncle, Leroy Nash who just recently passed out away last week. He was a great man and fantastic leader.

2020 has been one chaotic year. We have faced more obstacles and crises this year as a country than some decades as a country. Some of us have lost love ones this year due to sicknesses and unexpected tragedies.

In my first blog, “Born for Such a Time as This,” I wrote about how in the midst of chaos, tragedies, and crises, 2020 is still your year of vision. I concluded we are born for such a time as this. We were born to live in this moment in history. Why? Because we have vision. Vision is not what we see right now, but it is what we want the world to be. We are the solution to what the world needs. I stated, “when a problem arises a solution is nearby.” We have to come to the conclusion that we are the solution and not wait for someone else to fix our problems. Thus, I am not going to further highlight the problems. What I want to focus on now, is highlighting how you can be the solution.

Whenever there is chaos, there is a lack of order, when there is a lack of order, there is a lack of leadership. Thus, in order to fix chaos, you have to look at it from the opposite way. Whenever there is leadership, there will be order, and if there will be order, there will be no chaos. Crisis breeds creativity. So if we want to be a part of the solution and not the problem during these times, we must figure out how to be effective leaders.

Effective leadership is what makes any organization, team, family, and group thrive no matter what the circumstances may be. Crisis breeds creativity. A great leader knows how to be creative even during a crisis to get the job done. When you have a great leader on your team, you have a winning team. In this blog, I am going to show you what it means to be a leader, how to be an effective leader, and how to be an effective leader in the midst of chaos, tragedies, and crises.

So what is leadership? How do you have effective leadership?

John Maxwell defines leadership as “influence, nothing more, nothing less. Everything rises and falls upon leadership.” To further, John Maxwell’s definition of leadership, leadership is influencing others toward a goal and purpose. Based on this definition you can easily conclude, if you are a leader. You have to ask yourself, am I influencing myself and others? If so, you are a leader. Are you achieving results toward your goal or purpose? If so, then you are an effective leader.

In order to become an effective leader, you have to decide that you will be a leader. You have to decide that you will not be silent as your country and city goes array. You have to make a decision that you will be the solution and do something to move the country forward toward the common goal.

Effective leaders can’t be silent in the middle of crisis and chaos. Here is a quote from one of my favorite leaders, Bishop T.D. Jakes, “A child being abused is not only mad at the abuser but mad at the parent who stood silent in the midst of the abuse. In this case, Silence is abuse.The moment we accept that things can’t change it, things won’t get changed.”

History shows us that change can happen, and change will happen if we have effective leadership. Leaders are results driven, not fear living. Leaders offer solutions, not just problems.

After deciding to become a leader you need to exercise three core elements to be an effective leader.

Every effective leader needs three core elements:

Confidence
Vision
Direction

Confidence

After you decide on becoming a leader, you must have confidence in yourself that you can lead. Confidence is believing in yourself and in your potential to accomplish whatever you put your mind to do. People don’t want to follow unconfident people. People will follow people with bad ideas, as long as they are confident. Thus, it is important that if you truly believe your idea will help solve a problem, do whatever it takes to make yourself confident that your idea will work. Trust that even if your ideas don’t work, you will make the right adjustments to figure it out.

Vision

Next, on becoming an effective leader, you need vision. A leaders’ vision is always bigger than themselves. As stated above, vision is seeing what you want to see, not what you currently see. 2020 is still the year of vision, because there are so many problems, we can clearly see how we want the world to be, not what it is. Leaders have to show people where they are going. People want to follow those who have a clear vision about where they want to be and if they are in agreement with your vision, they will follow you wholeheartedly.

Direction

Lastly, on becoming an effective leader, you need direction. Here is a quote, “Leaders’ decisions determine our direction.” Yes, you have to make a decision to be a leader, have confidence, and vision, but if you can’t give me direction for what is the next step toward that vision we can’t follow you. Direction is showing me what is the next step toward our goal. Leaders may change directions many times, but if they are clear on what the next step should be, they will be an effective leader.

Therefore, the ways to become an effective leader is confidence, vision, and direction. Evaluate yourself, are you operating in these three elements. Which part of the elements do you need to work on the most so you can be an effective leader? There are so many more things to add to this list, but these are the three foundational principles to becoming an effective leader.

Now we must answer, how do we become an effective leader in the midst of chaos, tragedies, and crises in greater detail?

You can become an effective leader in the midst of chaos, tragedies, and crises by

Focus
Knowledge
Compromise and provide empathy
Offer hope and inspiration,
Being about the people, not your personal agenda, and
Fighting through criticism.

Focus

Do not focus on too many big issues at once. Take it one step at a time. Prioritize what are the most important needs, who needs the most help, what is good for the majority of society, and focus on people who believe in your vision. Think regionally and locally, not nationally or globally if you can. Be specific as you can to help you identify the problem of the needs of that particular community. Everyone’s issues are different. Once you can identify who you are trying to lead, focus on one area at a time to help you become more effective as a leader. Once you achieve your goal in one area of focus, you can move on to other areas and expand.

Knowledge

Do your research, know what you are talking about. Ignorance can be passed down from generation to generation, and so education is essential to making sure you are leading effectively. The worst kind of leader in the midst of chaos is an ignorant leader. As a leader, you must properly identify the problem, therefore, you can focus on identifying the right solution. If you are unclear about the problem, you won’t have the right solution, which will keep the world in chaos.

Compromise and provide empathy

Every good leader knows no matter how good your vision is you may not get everything you want. Thus, you must look at things from all angles and figure out what is the best solution. We have good and bad people on both sides of every argument. Your ally may not look like you. You have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone, put yourself in the shoes of others to help you reach your vision. One the greatest gifts a leader can offer is empathy. Before you can change people, you have to show you care about people and their needs.

Building bridges means building relationships with people who don’t agree with you.You have to figure out how to meet on a common ground. You don’t have to change who you are and your goal to work with people who are different from you. There are certain things you should never compromise as a leader, such as your identity and vision. However, you need to be clear on what you will not compromise and what are things you will.

Build relationships with people who are different from you while maintaining who you are. One interaction from one person from a different color can drastically change a person’s entire opinion of people from that group. Every effective leader knows how to provide empathy and compromise when necessary.

Offer hope and inspiration.

I don’t care how logical your vision and direction may be, if people don’t have hope things will get better, they will not follow your leadership. The best way to influence is not through force, but inspiration. In every argument, speech, and decision, make sure you are leading your people with vision filled with hope and inspiration, not filled with doom and destruction. When there is chaos, people need to change their hearts and minds from fear. No matter how bad the chaos, crisis, or the tragedy, always, always, and ALWAYS, offer hope and inspire them to a better future. If you do this, you are becoming an effective leader in the midst of chaos, tragedies, and crises.

Be about the people, not your personal agenda.

As people begin to follow these steps given above, people will follow you. However, you have to stay consistent in your message and solution. Don’t let leadership fill your ego, but fill your passion for the solution. It is not just about you. We need you to be an effective leader so that your entire generation, the next generation, and the next generation can be greatly impacted by your leadership. The world is the way it is now because of effective leaders. We are benefiting from their leadership. Thus, it is our duty and responsibility to not abuse our leadership, but keep it tailored toward our goal so we can eventually affect the world.

Fight through criticism

You can’t win everyone and help everybody issues. You can’t wait for everyone to agree with your decisions as a leader. Jesus threatened a power structure, by making controversial statements, and they killed him. However, over 2,000 years later Jesus’ impact is still running rapidly across the world with committed followers. Every leader gets criticized. Every leader will face some sort of persecution. As soon as you make a decision to be a leader, you will have negative feedback. However, because leaders believe in themselves, their vision, and the direction that everyone should take, they stand firm in their decisions. Leaders push through hurt, pain, and criticism, because they care more about the people and the results than their personal struggles.

In this blog, I showed you the solution to this world’s need right now is effective leadership. I explained what leadership means, how to achieve effective leadership by three core elements, and how to obtain effective leadership in the midst of chaos, crisis, and tragedies by six principles. There are no perfect leaders, but it is always the perfect time for leadership.

Blog Series: “Born for Such a Time as This pt.1”

“Why in the midst of chaos, tragedies, and crisis, 2020 is still your year of vision.”

You were born to live in this moment right now. . .
This is your season, this is your moment in history, this is your time!

I already know what you may be thinking right now? Am I insane? 2020 is my moment in destiny?

Yes, the same year as a nation we suffered with the tragic loss of legendary Kobe Bryant and his daughter in a plane crash, filled with a global pandemic, a major economic crisis with over 20 million people unemployed, and a racial uprising with riots and protest. I still say that 2020 is your year!

Beginning of this year, as we started a new decade, everyone said 2020 is the year of vision! 20/20 eye sight means perfect sight, so we thought the year of 2020 will be the year of perfect vision.

Everyone across the globe, had written down their plans and goals for this year and the next decade and thought to themselves this will be my best year and decade ever.

I am here to encourage you though we are facing many trials that 2020 is not over yet and so is your destiny! God is not done with you yet!

You were born for such a time as this!

I believe that we were created by a God of purpose, who created everyone with a purpose.

I don’t believe you were born because of a mistake or an accident. You are not an accident, you are not here by happenstance.

I was watching this Netflix series, called Our Planet.

“Our Planet” is an Award Winning Documentary that showcases the world’s natural wonders, iconic species and wildlife spectacles that still remain.

“Our Planet” website states, “the habitats that make up our planet are connected and reliant upon each other. The astonishing diversity of life on earth depends on these global connections.”

The Frozen Worlds, Jungles, Forests, Grasslands, Fresh Water, Coastal Seas are all connected. Even though they are unique, they need each other to survive.

Everything that our Creator made has a purpose. The ants have a purpose, the trees have a purpose, the dirt have a purpose. If one creation is not in purpose or abused, it affects the entire ecosystem.

As I was watching this series, I was amazed at looking at the entire world through the lens of a camera. I was extremely amazed at the animals that are extremely similar to humans, in how they mate, eat, and protect.

One thing I noticed is that with everything that the Creator made including animals, seas, plants, etc that nothing compared to God’s greatest creation: humans. Animals seemed to have one goal: Survival. Live, eat, and protect yourself and your family so you can live another day to do it all over again.

Soo it begged the question, are humans the same? Is our only purpose to live, eat, and protect?

In Genesis 1:25, it says,

“God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.”

In Genesis 1:26, it says,

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

Genesis 1:28 says, “God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

That’s the difference! Everything that God created had a purpose, but only mankind had its image. So what does it mean to have God’s image and likeness?

Image means “tsel” in Hebrew, this literally means, “shadow.”

“Tsel” further definition means “It is an exact replica, a mirrored image of who and what we are,” “resemblance; hence, a representative figure,” and “We have God’s moral, intellectual, and spiritual nature.”

This is our difference from other creation, is that we represent God. We are suppose to live like God here on the earth.

So what does that truly mean?

According to pbs.org, “In other words, for humans to have the conscious recognition of their being in the image of God means that they are the creature through whom God’s plans and purposes can be made known and actualized; humans, in this way, can be seen as co-creators with God.”

That quote breaks down two things:

We don’t just do purpose, we have the ability to understand God’s plans and purpose for our lives.
We are creators like God.

Unlike any other being, human beings are called to know their purpose, live in their purpose and to create things and give those things a purpose.

***You are called to know your God-given purpose, live out that purpose, and create things for a purpose to help further your purpose.**** I know that is a lot of purpose, but do you get it?

God never made one table, he only made the tree. God never made one building, he only provided the dirt. We are in charge of using the God given gifts and abilities, He gave us to move toward our purpose.

Back to my statement, “I am born for such a time as this”

What this means is that God created me, allowed me to live for right now, because He has a purpose for me to fulfill right now.

It doesn’t matter the season, the year, or how bad it gets, you were born to do something great with your life right now.

The next question becomes, what were you born to do. . . how do you find your purpose in this midst of crisis and chaos??

Google defines purpose as “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.”

In other words, purpose is the solution to a problem.

People got tired of eating with a spoon so they created forks. People got tired of walking so we created ways for us to be transported by donkeys and horses, people got tired of this, so they created bikes, trains, cars, airplanes, etc.

“When a problem arises, a solution is nearby.”

The quickest way to figure out what you were born to do is to identify the problems in the world you are passionate about solving. . .

Right now, I want you to think and write down problems in the world that need to be solved.

Then, think creatively about proposed solutions to this problem.

Now, what can you help create to find a solution to this problem? Or is there something out there that already exists that carries my solution?

**Remember our goal as humans beings is to find our purpose, live out our purpose, and create things and give it a purpose to help further your purpose.**

Now that you have identified problems in the world, figure out proposed solutions to the problem, think about what could you create or be a part of that is already created, it is time for you to act on it! When you begin to act on it you are living your life with a purpose. You are the solution!

Comment below, “I am the solution.” “I am the solution this world needs.”

Now, we all know we were born for such a time as this. . . we know we are the solution to the world’s problems. I want to identify four major problems the world is facing right now in 2020 and my proposed solution. . .

Loss of Loved Ones due to tragedies and diseases
Global Pandemic Causing Sickness, Fear, and Shutdowns
Economic Crisis
Racial Injustice from Police
Excessive Rioting and Looting

Before I offer my solutions, I want to talk about my vision.

Vision is the ability to plan the future with your imagination. Vision is not looking at the world for what it is, but looking at the world for what it is can be.

So, 2020 is still a year of vision, because the world is dealing with several crises, we are clear in seeing the problems, thus we can be clear on seeing the solution, and if we can we can clearly see the solutions, we can clearly see our future.

My vision is that we live in a world where people live long and fulfilling lives.
My vision is for those who do pass on will be honored and their legacies will thrive.
My vision is that this pandemic will end, and we will have a much healthier generation.
My vision is that there will be no more shutdowns, the event industry will thrive, and all those who are sick will be healed and recovered.
My vision is that there will no longer be an economic crisis.
My vision is that we have a thriving economy, where jobs are endless and businesses are booming, and all financial needs are not only met but exceeded.
My vision is that one day there will be no more police brutality, and no more unjust killings especially for the people of color.
My vision is there will be an influx of good police that will protect and serve well and these police officers will be protected.
My vision is that there will be systems in place for people if they try to abuse their power.
My vision is that this rioting and looting will end. All businesses and cities will be restored.
My vision is that people will find their purpose, their passions, and God’s plan for their lives and create systems to solve the world’s problems!

Is anyone in agreement with my vision???

Now, my proposed solution for these individual issues are different, however, there is one central theme to my solution: YOU!

My solution is that YOU realize YOU are the solution and that YOU begin to find YOUR purpose, live out YOUR purpose, and act on YOUR solutions by focusing on a way to solve them!

In summary, my goal today is to prove that you were born for such a time as this and why 2020 is still your year of vision.

2020 is your year of vision, vision is not what you see in the present, but what you see in the future. You may not be able to see your full vision come to pass, but it is your responsibility to pass on your vision.
